Laser Vein Treatments

Removal of veinsWith the Cutera Coolglide laser, vascular lesions such as tiny facial veins, spider veins on the legs and also hemangiomas (blood blisters) may be safely and effectively treated.  No injections needed as this is a non-invasive procedure.  A complimentary consultation will help determine if you are a candidate for this type of procedure or if alternate treatments such as sclerotherapy (injections done at a vascular clinic) would be more appropriate.  Please see below for more information on spider veins and how they are treated.

 Spider Veins:

Millions of women and men are troubled by unattractive veins on their faces and legs.  Spider veins resemble a “star” with numerous small veins radiating from a center point.  They may also appear as fine, separate lines, web-like mazes, or “branches” from a tree trunk.  Approximately 75% of females over the age of 18 have spider veins.  They may develop on any part of the body including the face.  Precision Laser uses the Cutera Coolglide laser to effectively treat both tiny and superficial face veins as well as spider veins to the legs.  A consultation will determine if this type of therapy is appropriate for the type of vessels visible on your legs.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins are typically caused by abnormal blood flow with resulting increased pressure to that vein.  Any condition or activity that causes increased pressure to the veins (weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing) can contribute to their development. Spider veins increase with age and are very common in the elderly.  Abnormal veins are also genetic and therefore run in families.  Estrogen is known to weaken the walls of veins and may contribute to their development.  During pregnancy, spider veins are most common in the 2nd trimester.

Do spider veins affect your health?

Spider veins are superficial in the skin and much smaller than varicose veins.  They are harmless and not associated with any symptoms.  They are primarily of cosmetic concern.  These veins are not associated with pain.  There is no cure for spider veins but one can protect against leg veins by wearing support stockings, maintaining a normal weight and including regular exercise such as walking in your daily routine.  Wearing sunscreen daily is important to help reduce spider veins to the facial area.

The Cutera Coolglide system delivers pulses of light energy which causes the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later absorbed by your body.  Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, where it should be.

How many treatments will I need?

Often, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient on the face.  However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the amount, colour, and size of the vessels being treated.  On the legs it is typical to expect 2-4 treatments due to the number of vessels.

What are the possible side effects?

The most commonly noticed side effect might be a slight redness or local swelling of the skin that disappears within a few hours after the treatment.  Some patients may experience bruising (this is common to bigger veins on the legs) and this will resolve within 4-6 weeks.  In rare instances a blister may occur.  Applying an antibiotic ointment to the affected area will decrease the chance of possible infection.

What results can I expect?

At the time of your treatment, you will see visible results that are subtle yet noticeable.  Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have significant improvement within 2 to 6 weeks of treatment.  However, your final results may not be apparent for several months.  You can expect to return to normal activities immediately.  If treated area is exposed to the sun afterwards, use sunscreen.  It is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities such as strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after a treatment.
